Name: Rimelands: Hammer of Thor

Developer: Crescent Moon Games

Price: $4.99(App Store)

I was too young at the time to play the original "paper and pen" RPGs that used only books, dice and imagination.  After this era subsided developers that made RPGs, replaced the dices with complex formulas to calculate chances of hitting, dodging, as well as all other skills and attributes. Fortunately for us, Rimelands tries to give to us a perfect mixture of the two, creating a unique experience. But is that enough to make this title a successful one? Or is this game more ambitious than they had hoped for? (more...)

We knew it was arriving this month, but we didn't expect it to arrive this early.  On the day of Apple's media event, many of you would have guessed that EA would announce their rooftop-running game and it's release on-stage (that is, if they will show up at the event).   It was first spotted earlier this year for the iPad, but now after several excuses and delays - EA have released it for the iPhone.

‘Crimson Gem Saga’ Review

Posted by John Birch on 30th August, 2010

Name: Crimson Gem Saga

Developer: Nate Games

Price: $9.99 (AppStore)

Overall Rating:   4.5 / 5

RPGs have always been rather popular on the App Store, but it always seemed that Action RPG's took priority over the more traditional turn-based RPG. As of late, though, it seems to be the other way around, with more large-scale turn-based RPG's being released, like Final Fantasy I and II, Chaos Rings, and now Crimson Gem Saga, a port of a formerly PSP exclusive RPG, receiving praise from critics. When Solomon's Keep was released earlier this year, many people were confused as to what the game was actually about. What they saw was something that rarely had been seen on the App Store and that was a cute mini-Diablo like experience wrapped up with the familiar dual-stick shooter scheme. The game was met with universal acclaim and was praised for it's simplicity, depth and fun. It even received 5 stars from us back in May. If you've never heard of it check out Solomon's Keep in the App Store here, and you can try out the lite here. (more...)

As soon as the iPad was announced on-stage by Steve Jobs at the keynote earlier this year, a billion ideas had popped into hundreds of developers' minds.  The huge, gorgeous display, the large multi-touch screen and the powerful A4 chip could all be implemented in a thousand different ways.  One of those ways is through Neon Battle HD, which the developers have kindly asked me to try out - and am I glad they did! Rovio, the developers of the ever-famous Angry Birds, have gained over 6 million downloads from the AppStore and Nokia's Ovi Store.  They're now aiming to expand that success over to several more types of media - one of which are movies.  Having been approached by a number of movie groups, the developers are taking a serious look into making an animated film of the extremely addictive game. It includes a few seconds of animation within the start of the game, and there's already a short cinematic trailer to show off what the story line could be - but will it make a good impression?  It will, of course, be a child's animated film, but if it ever does get made - I'll definitely want to see how it turns out.  Check out the cinematic trailer here: (more...)

Gameloft look like they're busy making a few sequels lately,  for their rather successful titles in the AppStore.  Earlier we caught eye of Dungeon Hunter 2, then Gangstar: Miami Vindication and now Modern Combat 2.  Their teaser trailers also seem to be shifting into a new humorous style, featuring real cut-scenes and a few effects. Modern Combat: Sandstorm was the French publisher's famous take on cloning a Call of Duty title.  They polished it extremely well to deliver us one of the first true console feel for an iPhone and iPod touch. Price: $5.99 (AppStore)

Overall Rating:4.5 / 5

Until now, SRPG's - or Strategy RPG's - have been quite rare if not completely nonexistant on the App Store. There have been many fantastic SRPG's for consoles, like the Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics series, and with the release of The War of Eustrath, iPhone gamers can now experience the same combination of Turn Based Strategy and RPG games in one awesome package.
