Though Ubisoft’s 48-hour freebie garnered a lot of excitement, the app seems to be broken. Assassin’s Creed II: Multiplayer was Ubisoft’s first foray into the multiplayer world with its much lauded Assassin’s Creed series, and it doesn’t seem to be working right.

Ubisoft has updated Assassin’s Creed II: Multiplayer‘s app page, saying

We understand that some people are experiencing connection problems, and this experience is not what we want for our players. A patch will be released shortly that should resolve the connection problems some customers are reporting. Please continue to send your feedback to http://www.ubi.com/us/support/, as we are reviewing the reports. Until we release this patch, the game will remain free.

This reassures us that Ubisoft is aware of the problem, and is actively looking into it. Although the problem still persists as of this writing, they are promising an update ASAP. Also promised is the game’s attractive price point of free will remain until the problem is resolved.

There are actually two (official) problems. The first is the fact that the game can’t be played over 3G; it can only be played over WiFi. And when on WiFi, your network’s security can’t be over the top, or it won’t work either. The promised patch Ubisoft is promising should fix the security issue, though the WiFi-only limitation seems to be in the air.

However, in my own experiences, I can definitely say there is more than security and WiFi-only issues with the game. Attempting to play it, I have had it freeze up while looking for a game (a server side problem?), and refuse to relaunch. Instead, every time I try to launch it, a white screen comes up and does nothing.

None-the-less, an update is on the way, which should fix the official issues (and hopefully the ones I am having).
