Posted by William Ye on 11th January, 2010

Name: Gushers

Price: $0.99 (AppStore Link)

Developer: Razorleaf Studios

Size: 19.8MB

Overall Rating:

This is one of those apps which I took one look at and I thought it would be boring.  However, I proved myself wrong after playing it. The game is actually quite simple and really addicting.

The first thing I noticed when I opened up the game was that you can set your own profile. You can save up to 3 profiles and name them differently and switch between each quite simply. Most puzzle games don’t really have this sort of option but because the game also has a story mode I would say it is quite appropriate.

The main menu is easy to navigate having only 5 buttons surrounding a big red PLAY button. The music sounds pretty catchy on the main menu too. There aren’t many options from the options menu. Just 2 sliders which can change the volume of the Sound Effects and Music.

High scores are recorded locally as well as Globally but not with any of the big OpenFeints or Plus+. The How to Play is easy to understand as well. 7 Pages long it goes through the game in a concise way.

Your objective is to build a pipeline as long as possible with the pipes you are given. You can’t choose your next pipe and the screen only displays the next 4 pipes available. The oil will start to flow once your time is up or you can start it early by pressing “Start Oil” on the top right of the screen. You build the pipes using the oil well as the starting position from which your oil will start to flow from. The oil well can be rotated but not moved.

When you earn money whilst playing the game you can spend your profits on buying technologies that can help you in your next games. Technologies will be unlocked as you progress through levels.

If you build pipes that are not used they will subtract from your oil score. Every level requires you to reach a particular amount of oil. Once your oil is flowing you can speed this process up by pressing Speed Oil.

There are 2 game modes. Story and Competition. Story is where you will progress through levels to become the next oil legend. In Competition you try to last as long as possible and pass through 80 levels of pipe building. Most of the time you will come across some special terrains that make your game more difficult for example Rocks which are like barriers but can be blown up with dynamite. (more later). OIL is a special bonus objective that appeared once in each area of the world.

In order to achieve the OIL award for a level, you must build your oil pipeline in such a way that oil will pass through the O, I and L tiles in that order. As you collect OIL awards you will slowly unlock the vortex, allowing you access to challenging bonus levels.

A nifty little thing is the Encyclopedia which you can access from the main menu or from the menu inside whilst you play your game. It’s a little tool that will explain anything you don’t understand from the different types of Pipes, Special Terrain, Technologies, Events and Effects, Tilesets and a little Tips at the back.

There must be hours and hours of gameplay that exist in this game. So many levels and things to unlock I could play this forever. It’s also extremely hard so you won’t be finishing everything the first time through.

  • Presentation & Graphics 4/5 - Although the Graphics in the game did not really appeal to me I must say there isn’t really anything wrong with them except I don’t like them. This was probably the main reason I didn’t like the game as soon as I picked it up, I always look for Graphics when I play a game.
  • Audio 4.5/5 - Someone’s been working on this. There must be at least 5 different tracks throughout the game. Each one sounding mysteriously awesome (:
  • Gameplay & Controls 5/5 - The Gameplay is extremely fun and the controls are easy to utilize. I’ve not really had any trouble with the game. Its fun and innovative.
  • Replay Value 5/5 - Replay? You’ll be replaying this ALOT if you want to get everything. An awesome app.
  • Value For Money 4/5 - 99c for an app with so much content is worth it. I’d recommend you get this.
